The Essenaries
In the beginning, when the veil between the Badlands and Drakanore first began to fray, the three Primal spirits—the Spirit of the Wolf, the Spirit of the Cat, and the Spirit of the Bat—came together. They understood the dire consequences this breach could bring to the Badlands and its people.
With a single bite, each spirit held the power to irrevocably change an innocent life. To safeguard humanity, the spirits chose a single individual—one deemed worthy—to carry their essence into the Badlands. This chosen vessel, imbued with the spirits’ power, possessed both the ability to heal and to inflict great harm. Though powerful, the gift was not immutable; with the correct incantation, the spirit’s influence could be undone.
The Keeper
The spirits recognized that no single vessel could contain the full force of their power. The pull of their combined essence was too great for one soul to bear. Thus, they selected a second individual, a grounding presence meant to guide and support the vessel.
“For one to become three, there must first be two.”
This second guardian became known as The Keeper, and the vessel, The Essenarie. Their bond one of romance or of kinship. For without the Keeper, the Essenarie would risk losing themselves to the overwhelming draw of the spirits within.
The Temperate
The third guardian, responsible for being the calm in the Essenarie's storm. There can be one or many Temperates.
Death and the Passing of the Gift
Should the Essenarie fall in battle or succumb to death, the Keeper would inherit the responsibility of safeguarding the spirits’ essence until a new Essenarie was chosen. Only once this duty was fully fulfilled could the Keeper be released; allowed to pass on in peace, their service complete.
