The Scattering
Earth-based Darraknoir Castes
Long before the obsidian crown and before Zarakel’s ascension, while myth and legend were still young Earth, and Darraknoir’s people were coming to terms with the eternal ways of the Vampire, a small coven of witches gathered together to solve a tremendous problem.
One of their own had been changed forever into a Vampire. She no longer could access the magic the sisters were so dependent on, all she craved was blood. In order to cure her, their leader, a witch by the name of Circate, suggested the group call upon the mysterious powers of the Void in order to unwind the vampiric curse laid upon their sister in the craft.
The Void was not fully understood, even to this day it isn't. Its call mysterious and strong but always present between the veil of reality and magic. Something no witch, nor wizard, nor warlock had ever dared to interact with, even in their most desperate hour. But Circate was certain that with this power their coven they would be able to break the barrier into the void and reverse the curse.
The ritual went well, surprisingly so. The threads between reality unwound but instead of obeying the witches magic, the curiosity of the void took over. It sensed the reality of Darraknoir, its peoples, and its magic and decided to take it. The entire region, now known in Darraknoir’s history as The Dead Wood, was taken by the Void. Its people gone in a flash of black.
In reality, tiny rifts opened across the region and with it, the people and creatures. After it took the magic from the land, the people were forced into the next closest reality: Earth. Circate, her coven, their cursed sister, and the citizens of the region were scattered across Earth thousands of years before the great rift of 1869 opened.
Members of every Darraknoir caste were taken from the world they once knew. With no way to return, they were forced to blend in with ancient human civilization. While the magic was thin here, those that could perform magic kept it a secret to those they befriended. Their curses or ancestors passed on to the next generation and so on and so forth.
The Rift’s Calling
While few and far between, the descendents of Darrkanoir could hear the call of the rift when it opened in 1869. Man feeling a sense of familiarity washing over them and a call to head to the Badlands in order to reconnect with a history long sense past. While none of the original travelers from the scattering live to this day, some passed the myths and legends of their homeworld onto their descendents, fragments remaining of what it was when they arrived on Earth.
Others that come to the Badlands know not of the origin, assuming they are from that of Earth, believing the ancient myths and legends that have existed for millennia.

FAQ for Earth-born Castes
Where were The Scattered sent?
Portals opened all over Earth, moving people from Darraknoir across the entire world. They were sometimes lucky to appear with family, friends, or neighbours but the majority were alone in a strange new place.
When was The Scattering?
This occurred around 1000 BCE. Almost 3,000 years before the Badlands takes place now.
I want to play a version of “insert mythology of vampires, werewolves etc from history”?
While some myths and legends are true in the world of the Badlands, some are just that: myths and legends”. We suggest adapting the myth to fit within the idea that their origin is that of The Shattering.
Can I be a true earth based caste? Pretty please?
No. All Darraknoir born castes that lived on earth before the rift opening of 1869 are the result of The Scattering. This is non-negotiable
I have a very specific idea that I’m not sure if it works what do I do?
