What Are Special Characters?

Special Characters are individuals granted unique or special abilities or backgrounds that extend beyond the established bounds of current world lore. These characters possess traits or powers not typically accessible to standard characters; for example, while general magic rules allow any character to conjure a small flame, a Special Character may be able to summon a blaze powerful enough to scorch the earth. (It should be noted that such abilities are only mechanically supported within the game via specific systems, such as Veilguard magic, otherwise are considered flavour for RP /me’s).

Before the background option known as The Scattering was introduced, only approved Special Characters were permitted to originate from beyond the Badlands or to have existed prior to the opening of the first rift in 1869.

Other special abilities could be linked to bloodline (in respects to vampires), or family ties, which might grant members of that group abilities outside of the current lore scope.

Special Abilities

These flavour-based powers do not rely on mechanics but enhance immersion, mystery, and thematic depth; rewarding rich characterization, roleplay commitment, and creative storytelling. Each is subtle, poetic, and designed to elevate the character’s myth without disrupting the balance of the world. Some abilities can also be linked solely towards story-telling, rather than purely in-game flavour.

Any agreed-upon ability that may influence or affect other player characters is only valid with the consent of those players, in accordance with the rules against powergaming.

It’s important to remember that the greater the power, the greater the cost. Abilities perceived as especially potent should carry meaningful risks or consequences. Every power must be balanced with a clear risk-versus-reward element, and this should be reflected in role-play. All Special Characters are expected to possess flaws, weaknesses, or limitations; no character is without cost.

Special Character Responsibility

Being granted a Special Character is a privilege, not an entitlement. Those who receive this status are expected to treat it with respect and consistently deliver high-quality roleplay. Please note that the Lore Team reserves the right to revoke Special Character status if rule violations occur, if a character is played out of alignment with their intended concept, or if they exceed the scope of their approved abilities.

Special Character Status

Applications for Special Characters will open at designated times, depending on caste availability. This staggered approach ensures a balanced distribution of Special Characters across all castes, rather than an over-concentration within a single group (we're looking at you, vampires!).
