A Guide to Publishing

It is possible to write and publish different types of documentation within the Badlands through the library and publishing system. Libraries can be found around the Badlands in most towns, either at newspaper stands or within the same building that the banks are hosted within. The main library and publishing building is found at the Tribune newspaper building in Saint Denis.

Obtaining a Blank Document to Edit

When at one of the publishing libraries you will be prompted with an interact option to open up the library menu. You will be presented with several choices. To create a new document, select “Creation”.

Editing the Document

When you first open the document, you will be greeted with a single grey page with several icons running along the top. These icons are as follows:

Edit

Move page left

Add a page

Move page right

Delete page

You can video a brief video tutorial here.

Publishing Types

There are currently five types of document that you can publish. They all have the same page size and each will allow you to have multiple pages. The only difference between them is the item icon. These types are as follows:

  • Newspaper

  • Letter

  • Contract

  • Book

  • Magazine

After selecting a document type you will be prompted to enter in a name for the document, the author’s name, as well as set up who is able to edit the document (this can be set to the author only, anyone in the same job as yourself, or it can be set so that anyone can edit it). We recommend you set this to only author edit (this is set by default).

Once you have selected and set up the document, you will find that you now have a blank copy of that document item in your inventory. You can double click on this item to open up the document and from there you can start editing it.

It should be noted that the document will only become publicly available to purchase and read AFTER requesting for it to be published. So, whilst it is unpublished the document is private and can be used as a personal notebook or the likes if you so desire.

Publishing your Document

Once the you are happy with how the document looks, you can opt to request publishing rights for it. Take the book back to the library and select “Publish”. You will be greeted with a menu showing all the documents in your inventory. Select the document you wish to publish (the publish request will cost a grand total of $10). This will send a request to the publishers who will then take the time to view each publishing request and make sure the documents are edited correctly and readable before either accepting or denying the request. Once the document has been accepted it will be available for anyone to buy from the Publications listing.

Why might my document be denied?
Sometimes the request to publish a document may be denied. There are various reasons that this might not happen, these include, but are not limited to:

  • The document is blank; the edits did not take and the document is not readable

  • Something went wrong with the editing; not all of the document is viewable

  • The document contains details that would first need to be cleared by the Lore Team

If you are unsure whether or not the contents of a document would need approval from the Lore Team first, please feel free to open up a Lore Ticket on the Discord and ask!

To move between the pages without moving the pages around, you can click on the bottom left or right corners to flip page.

It should be noted as this point that when you add a new page to the document it will make an exact copy of the previous page; so make sure you delete the contents of this new page and edit the new information you want on there, otherwise you will end up with duplicate pages within your document!

Editing the Pages

Clicking on the edit icon one of the document’s pages will bring up a word document style editing system which I am sure that many are familiar with in one way or another. This editing system is basically a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) system, apart from the page colour being edited in white in the word processor and being grey when you look at the book (unless you change it!).

Two main things to note here are the two icons in the top left and top right of the editing window.

Edit background

Close the page editing window

The first blank page

Page editing

The first of the two icons will allow you to edit the colour of each page, and allow you to setup a background image if you so desire. This is particularly good if you have a certain style in mind. Background images will use up the entire page space, removing the need for a background colour change.

The second icon saves and closes the current edit page and, if all goes well, you should be returned to the document’s page view instead and your edits should be visible.

Finishing the Document

Once you have added and edited all the pages that you wish to (we highly recommend adding one new page at a time, editing it, saving and closing it, before adding a new page to edit), you should double check that your document is looking just like you wish it to. Once you are happy with how it looks you can visit a publishing location and put in a request to have the document published.

A Note on Images

As a quick note regarding images, background or otherwise, used within the books; you will need to upload these some where (such as PostImage). If the image is removed at any point, or the URL for it is changed, the image will break in game and it will no longer be viewable (the images are NOT uploaded to the Badlands’ server host). Documents with broken images, or missing files, will be removed from publication.
